Located in the northeastern part of Quang Ninh Province, about 50 kilometers from Ha Long, Van Don Island District is an emerging destination that blends unspoiled natural beauty with deep cultural and historical significance. Traditionally sustained by agriculture, forestry, and fisheries, the region is now gradually developing its tourism potential, thanks to its pristine landscapes, rich heritage, and strategic coastal setting. With a harmonious mix of islands, beaches, and local communities, Van Don offers a quieter and more authentic alternative to the more frequented tourist hubs nearby.

Van Don is particularly renowned for its stunning, untouched beaches such as Quan Lan Beach, Minh Chau Beach, and Ngoc Vung Island, often considered among the most beautiful coastal areas in northern Vietnam. These idyllic shores, with their white sands and crystal-clear waters, provide perfect settings for relaxation and nature-based activities. At the heart of the district lies Cai Rong Town, located on the main island, which once served as one of Vietnam’s earliest international trading ports during the Ly and Tran dynasties. The area also holds historical importance, having witnessed significant naval battles led by Tran Khanh Du, who defended the nation against foreign invaders.

The district comprises one main island, Cai Bau Island, along with numerous smaller offshore islands, creating a diverse and scenic archipelago. Cai Bau Island is conveniently connected to the mainland via a series of bridges from Cua Ong, making access relatively easy. Visitors can reach Van Don in about an hour by car from Ha Long City, or by bus in approximately 90 minutes. From Cai Rong Pier, boats and high-speed ferries provide connections to nearby islands, including Quan Lan, offering opportunities for beach escapes, trekking, and cave exploration. With future plans to integrate its natural beaches with Bai Tu Long National Park into a comprehensive maritime tourism complex, Van Don is poised to become one of northern Vietnam’s most attractive coastal destinations.
