The journey begins as we leave the city streets of Hanoi behind and head westward into the mountains. Along the way, a visit to a Muong village offers a glimpse into the traditions of one of Vietnam’s lesser-known ethnic groups. A scenic pause at Thung Khe Pass gifts us sweeping views of misty valleys below.
By midday, we arrive in Mai Chau, where a warm, home-cooked lunch awaits in a traditional stilt house. The afternoon invites a gentle trek through patchwork rice paddies and wooden homes nestled in the villages of Pom Coong and Na Phon - where the slow rhythm of rural life speaks volumes without words.
Dinner and overnight in Mai Chau.
After a peaceful morning, the road leads us deeper into nature’s embrace - Pu Luong Nature Reserve. Upon arrival, we head to a hanging bridge stretched over the Cham River to begin our discovery of the iconic water wheels. These bamboo structures quietly reveal the ingenuity of the local communities.
A fisherman’s house offers a place to rest before stepping onto a hand-built bamboo raft. Guided by a local boatman, we glide downstream, learning how to paddle and soaking up the tranquility of the surrounding landscape.
The journey ends at Tan Lap Bridgebefore we return for a hearty dinner and a restful night in Pu Luong.
As the morning light filters through the trees, a walk begins along leafy trails that open into a hidden village resting beneath steep limestone cliffs. Each turn unveils another frame-worthy view.
This trail threads through farmland and forest, past rivers, fields, and quiet homes - offering not only beauty but the soul of Pu Luong.
After lunch, it’s time to bid farewell and continue toward Ninh Binh, a region famous for its majestic karst peaks and peaceful rice plains. Overnight in Ninh Binh.
The day starts with a serene boat ride through Tam Coc’s watery landscape, where rivers wind through caves and cliffs that rise like silent guardians. As you glide past mossy rock faces and golden rice fields, it’s easy to see why Tam Coc is often called “Halong Bay on land.”
A short journey then takes us to Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s ancient capital. Among temple courtyards and aged stone gates, we trace the legacy of the Dinh and Le kings.
By afternoon, the road loops back to Hanoi, closing a journey rich in scenery, stories, and stillness.
